“Better has created a collaborative, supportive, and innovative work environment”

“I always thought of myself as someone who would only like working from home, but the sense of community and the people at Better Meds made me want to be in the office more,” Maja Kosir told us about her internship at Better.

Maja Kosir joined Better for an 8-week internship through the American Slovenian Education Foundation (ASEF) programme this summer. We talked to her about her experience and her work at Better Meds, our electronic prescribing and medication administration solution.

Can you tell us a bit about your background and what led you to pursue an internship with Better?

I am currently studying at the University of Dayton in Ohio while pursuing a degree in Communication Management and a minor in Biology. I have come to Slovenia through the American Slovenian Education Foundation (ASEF), which is a program that selects Americans with Slovenian heritage to engage in a 10-week research visit. In addition, we are encouraged to dive into the rich culture of Slovenia and explore our heritage. I am so grateful for this experience because I have been able to reconnect with family while also gaining a valuable internship with Better Meds.

What were your first impressions when you started your internship here?

From the very first day, everyone here has been so warm and welcoming. Better has truly created a collaborative, supportive, and innovative work environment that encourages everyone to be the best they can possibly be. I am so appreciative of how willing people have been at the office to get to know me, take me to get lunch, have a cappuccino, and help me with any questions I have!

What have been your main responsibilities during your time at Better?

My two main goals have been to create a stakeholder map and a communication strategy for the Better Meds EDU programme, which has been created for universities to enable students to learn with the tools they will use in their future practice.

I have spent the majority of my time researching which universities in the United States could benefit from implementing the Better Meds EDU programme in their curriculum. This has been quite an extensive process, and I wish I could spend more time working on this portion of my project. As my last step, I have also worked out a communication strategy for reaching and communicating with those universities.

Is there a moment or experience during your internship that stands out to you as particularly memorable?

One of the most memorable experiences I had while working at Better Meds was showing my mentors the work I did each week. This was highly beneficial to me because it allowed me to demonstrate the work I did and get feedback from my mentors. It also taught me how to defend my ideas and state why I thought they were important to me.

Is there anything that surprised you about working here?

I always thought of myself as someone who would only like working from home, but the sense of community and the people at Better Meds made me want to be in the office more than I wanted to be at home!

Were there any team members who made a significant impact on your experience? If so, how?

Without the help of my mentors, Veronika and Alma, I would definitely not have had as valuable an experience as I had while working at Better Meds. They were both great mentors who were extremely flexible, caring, welcoming, and insightful. I am very grateful that I had such wonderful mentors who put time and effort into creating an 8-week internship for me.

Do you have any advice for future interns or new hires at our company?

Something that I would say to future new hires is not to be afraid to talk with anyone in the office and ask questions! Everyone at Better Meds wants to get to know you and help you with anything you are unclear about. I am so lucky that many of my coworkers have been so kind to take me to play badminton, get some coffee near the city centre river, grab lunch at a variety of places, and so much more!
